What are internet phone calls?

How to get started with internet telephony

What's different about our internet calls?
Traditionally, internet phones allow you to make calls from one computer to another, using a headset. The drawback is that you have to be at your computer in order to make an internet call. ILEVoiceLine's internet phone service is different. It uses an InnoMedia phone adaptor to connect your home phone to your broadband modem or router. ILEVoiceLine routes calls over your internet connection, just like most internet phone service providers. The difference is that you make and receive cheap and free internet calls from your normal home phone.
In practice, this means two things. Unlike some internet phone services, you aren't restricted to making free calls only to other computers, or only to people who have signed up to the same provider. Pay as You Go: From 3.00€ per month,
Includes an American telephone number, but pays for the package only. Any calls that need to be made are paid for in advance with a 'top up'. Customers pay an amount with which to make calls, and can then be tracked by the 'Account balance announcement' which is a feature of the phone service. When you would like to top up your account further, you just come to the La Alternativa office and pay.
Spain Unlimited: From 20€ per month,

Off Plan Calls: When a package does not include countries you wish to call, a customer may use the facility of the 'Off Plan Calls' to enable their phone to call these numbers. Any calls you wish to make to telephones around the world or to mobiles, It is necessary to assign an amount of money to the 'Off Plan Calls' or 'Top Up' this will give you the freedom to call any country you wish including mobiles (please note prices are listed on the Off Plan Rate Sheet )
NOTE: Calls to emergency services are not able to be made from your ILE Voiceline phone, make sure that you have alternative means to call Ambulance, Fire and Police for your family's safety. A continuously charged mobile phone is recommended.
It is possible for a customer to upgrade or change their package, to alternative calling plans that may better suit your needs. No charge for changing price plans or packages. (Can only be changed in each billing cycle)
We are also able to offer our new fax option at greatly reduced rates, either on your existing phone line or as an added line so you can continue to make calls and send and receive Fax's at the same time.
Telephone handsets: We have a range available in the office or the customer can provide their own handset, as any store bought telephone, standard or dect style will work with our system. It is important to know that if you buy an inferior quality phone, it may affect voice quality.

Why does my phone sometimes echo?
Why does my telephone occasionally echo or drop the call, why do I get a delay? I don't get this problem with a 'normal' land line phone. These are just a few of the questions we at La Alternativa sometimes get asked. Well the answer to this lies in a number of factors. First and foremost you must have a reliable high speed internet connection other wise known as Broadband.
Secondly unlike a landline telephone system which uses the telephone cable network to connect your call via the many telephone exchanges situated all over the world, before being sent on to your call destination. With ILEVoiceLine your call doesn't actually join the cable network until it reaches our offices in the center of Chiclana and even then it has a long way to go before it ever reaches the main phone servers based in New Jersey NY, that's right, the state of New York in the USA.
It is because this is an Internet based phone service otherwise known as VoIP 'Voice over Internet Protocol' a revolutionary technology that has the potential to completely rework the way people communicate, and it just so happens that most of the VoIP servers seem to be in the United States. So, for example you want to speak to relatives in the UK, you dial your number, and wait for the person at the other end to answer, they, if they are in of course answer 'Hello' you reply 'Hi it's me' or similar.
Now that's taken maybe 2 or 3 seconds, plus the connection. For that 2 to 3 second exchange your voice has been converted from analogue to a digital signal by the voice router connected to your handset, it has then been sent up to the radio antenna on your roof which in turn sends your digitised voice by Wi-Fi to a distribution mast local to your area, it then in some cases, sends that signal onto another 1 or 2 radios again by Wi-Fi before reaching the main radio mast at our offices in Central Chiclana.
Your voice then together with tens of thousands of other bits of VoIP traffic and internet data enters our servers which then, and this is where it gets interesting, gets sent onto the fiber optic network on up to Madrid where the main internet servers for the whole of Spain are situated. Your voice now together with hundreds of billions of bits of data is either sent via the London servers before being sent onto the VoIP servers in the States, although, and this seems to be coming more frequent, and that is that VoIP traffic is travelling via servers in Germany before London, and then carrying on.
It doesn't stop here your 'Hi it's me' then gets sent back to either the telephone exchange in the UK, and onto the person you called, or if you are calling another VoIP user the Internet server and then onto the person you just called and said 'Hello' Don't forget their 'Hello' has also just done the same journey only in reverse. All this has happened at 300,000 kilometers (or 186,000 miles) per second, about a million times greater than the speed of sound and travelled a distance of over 16,000KM (10,000 Miles) the first part of it amazingly through the air wirelessly. And don't forget this goes on for the duration of your call.
So yes we do appreciate how frustrating it can be when a call echoes, breaks up or you get a slight delay, (this can normally be resolved by redialing), just remember your ' Hi mum it's me' has just travelled half way round the world at the speed of light.
